Camp Kanata’s Trainee Program is a two-year program that develops leadership and service skills for campers to prepare them to become camp counselors.
Campers can apply for our Camper in Leadership Training (CILT) program when they are in 10th grade or 16 years old. Once they have successfully completed their CILT session, they will be invited to apply as a Counselor in Training (CIT) the following summer.
Counselor in Training (CIT) is the second year of our trainee program. The CIT program consists of three co-ed groups that attend Camp Kanata for a three-week experience. During these sessions, participants continue their leadership development training as well as build their camp counselor skills and experience. CITs live in a cabin with campers each week and receive feedback and weekly evaluations from their cabin counselors as well as coaching from their Trainee Coordinators. CITs are invited to apply for employment after successfully completing their CIT session.
Apply to the Trainee Program
Individuals are eligible to apply for our Trainee Program as a Camper In Leadership Training (CILT), if they are currently in the 10th grade or 16 years old. The CILT application for Summer 2025 has closed.
CILT Expectations
Expectations for CILTs are high, and the application process is competitive. In addition to the application and references you submit, we will also take your previous Camp history into consideration, including recommendations from previous staff members.
During the summer, trainees are expected to model correct behavior for campers and must maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Participants gain great insight into Camp goals and philosophy. Many of our summer staff went through the Trainee program and continued their camping careers with us.
Keep in mind, however, that a long-term camping history at Kanata does not in itself guarantee a spot in the program, nor does participation in the program guarantee a future position as a CIT or camp counselor.
