Ryan's Thought for the Week- 2.24.25

Have I shared my love of birds in this space before? I'm not sure I have. By love I don't mean "I would like to have a pet bird" or "Gosh I love when birds make nests in my garage." I love walking outside, especially at this time of year, and hearing five different bird calls all at once. I love watching a flock of birds move as one over the fields beside Camp Kanata Road.

Years ago I heard Gordon Hempton on the On Being podcast and he shared something that blew my mind. Hempton is an acoustic ecologist and studies sound in the natural world. After talking about Olympia National Park in Washington as one of the last truly quiet places on Earth, he shared that the human ear is tuned, not for the human voice, but for birdsong! After hearing that I didn't feel like I was losing my hearing after all. I just wasn't made to hear the human voice as well as I was to hear birds singing.

As I walked home from taking my daughter to the bus this morning, all I could here were birds. In their songs I heard a promise of warmer weather and longer days. I heard the celebration of living life in the moment as well as the promise of new life to come. After days of cold and gray weather, I felt a swelling of my heart as I remembered that Winter will not last forever!

Some days of late have been difficult. Tuning into the news can make one lose hope that there's anything good happening in the world. I'm grateful for the birds reminding me that there's life to be lived. I'm grateful I have a beautiful family and wonderful friends who are the good I turn to when the skies are gray and the air is too cold for comfort.

I'm also grateful for the Kanata Community that lives Be Well and Do Good every day, creating warmth and goodness wherever we might be!
